What do we do in VAS?

The DevOps Group within Volvo Autonomous Solutions (VAS) is responsible for the Software Factory and provides Test Automation and Orchestration frameworks that enable efficient software development and validation.

We deliver the frameworks, tools, services, and engineering capabilities that allow development and verification teams to build, test, deploy, and operate software efficiently. Our responsibilities span the entire software delivery ecosystem, including source control management, CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, container platforms, infrastructure services, test orchestration, and observability solutions.

Together, these capabilities form our Software Factory, which accelerates software delivery, improves software quality, increases automation, and promotes DevOps best practices across the organization.

Description of the Area

As part of our Software Factory, VAS has developed Octopus, an in-house workflow orchestration platform designed to automate and streamline engineering processes across the software development and validation lifecycle.

As we evolve from a traditional DevOps organization toward a Platform Engineering operating model, we are exploring how Artificial Intelligence (AI), AI Agents, and AIOps can transform platform operations and software delivery. This thesis will investigate how AI-driven capabilities can be integrated into the Octopus platform to enhance automation, operational efficiency, and developer experience.

Using Octopus as the experimental environment, the study will evaluate how the role of DevOps engineers may evolve, identify operational activities that can benefit from AI assistance or autonomous execution by AI agents, and determine where human oversight remains essential. The work will also explore governance, reliability, security, compliance, and competency considerations required for the safe and successful adoption of AI-enabled operations.

Thesis Description

This thesis investigates how AI Agents and AIOps can reshape DevOps practices and accelerate the transition toward Platform Engineering within Volvo Autonomous Solutions (VAS).

Through an industrial case study using the Octopus platform, the research will analyze:

• How AI impacts the role and responsibilities of DevOps engineers.
• Which operational activities are suitable for AI-assisted execution.
• Which activities can be safely automated through autonomous AI agents.
• Where human decision-making, accountability, and oversight must remain mandatory.
• The governance, reliability, security, compliance, and operational requirements for AI-enabled platforms.
• The skills, competencies, and organizational capabilities required for future Platform Engineering teams.

The outcome will be an evidence-based adoption framework that provides a structured and low-risk approach for introducing AIOps and AI Agents within VAS. The study will help define how Octopus can evolve from a workflow orchestration platform into an intelligent Platform Engineering capability while maintaining appropriate guardrails, operational control, security, and human accountability.
