At ABB, we're shaping the future of sustainable industry. Our Advanced Process Control (APC) and optimization team is at the heart of that mission, helping pulp and paper mills across Sweden maximize their plant performance and environmental footprint.
As an Advanced Process Control Engineer, you'll collaborate closely with our dynamic team and directly with customers to understand their unique challenges and design best-in-class control solutions using APC as well as other optimization solutions designed for the pulp and paper industry. You'll work hands-on with process modeling, control strategy development, system deployment, and performance optimization, all while building lasting relationships with our customers and colleagues. This is a role where your expertise drives real impact, from the initial sales phase through commissioning, service, and continuous improvements.
We are the global market leader in online quality measurements, system solutions, and advanced services for the Pulp and Paper industry. You'll be part of a team based primarily in Kista, Stockholm, with a flexible working culture that supports remote work and a healthy work-life balance. Travel to customer sites is expected (approximately 8 days/month), it's a key part of staying connected to the work we deliver.
You will be mainly accountable for:
- Lead process analyses and performance evaluations during the sales and pre-project phases, identifying improvement opportunities
- Develop control specifications, oversee application adaptation, and conduct functional testing as the lead engineer for your project
- Perform hands-on model identification, controller programming, and control tuning during system commissioning
- Collect and analyze data to verify that contractual performance guarantees are met
- Train operators and engineers on our solutions, ensuring smooth adoption
- Conduct regular service audits on installed systems and lead improvement initiatives
- Communicate technical findings and recommendations clearly to project teams and plant operators
- Work flexibly between the office, remote connections, and customer sites across Sweden
Qualifications for the role
- Master's degree in engineering (or equivalent), preferably with a focus on control theory
- Experience with process control, production planning, or optimization systems is meritorious
- MPC (Model Predictive Control) experience is meritorious
- A clear communicator who can translate complex technical analyses into actionable insights
- Fluent in both Swedish and English
- A valid Swedish B-driver's license (required for role)
- Prior experience from the pulp and paper industry is meritorious
